A complete collection of illustrated short stories, originally published in Ludgate Monthly magazine between 1893 and 1894, chronicling all seven cases of (often overlooked) early female detective and one of the many literary "rivals of Sherlock Holmes", Ms. Loveday Brooke.
Unlike her female literary counterparts (Violet Strange, Miss Caley, Lady Molly of Scotland Yard, etc... číst celé.), Ms. Brooke does not enter the detection business due to some past personal tragedy, nor does her story culminate in marriage and return to a more traditional gender role. Like the great Sherlock Holmes himself, Ms. Brooke does it simply because she is good at it - so good, in fact, that it feels almost unfair to a contemporary reader, accustomed to the principle of "fair play", which allows them a shot at solving the mystery alongside the detective (in late Victorian detective fiction, this principle was not yet formulated, let alone adhered to).
Solid paperback with a competent introduction by scholar Michele Slung and original illustrations as they appeared in Ludgate Monthly in 1893. Note that this is a reprint, not a facsimile of the original publication.
