Třicetiletá válka ( 1618 -1648) vyšlehla na českém území z náboženských rozporů, ale brzy zasáhla celou Evropu. Patřila k prvnímu globálnímu konfliktu, který v sobě zahrnoval i další ozbrojené střety, původně spolu nesouvisející. Po nástupu Ferdinanda II. na trůn skončila možnost smírného řešení. Čeští stavové za svého krále prohlásili Fridricha Falckého, tzv. zimního krále a pod protestantským praporem vytáhli do boje se střídavými úspěchy. Podařilo se jim ohrozit Vídeň, ale posléze jejich úspěchy slábly.
