With their eleven museums, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden have an abundance of unique art treasures spanning numerous themes and historical eras and attracting visitors from all over the world. The historical Green Vault, reopened in 2006, is a spectacular gem in itself filled with jewels and precious objects. The Old Masters Picture Gallery presents masterpieces from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, such as Raphael s world-renowned Sistine Madonna, while in part incomparable prints can be seen at the Collection of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs. These and the other museums, including the Porcelain Collection, Sculpture Collection, the Armory, and the Museum of Decorative Arts, essentially owe their existence to the patronage of Augustus II the Strong and his son, Augustus III. Today, these museums make it possible to take a journey through time from antiquity to the present day. This opulent volume presents numerous illustrations featuring very special highlights from the individual collections as well as the historical buildings in which they are housed.
