'Unsung Women' by Carol Nappholz is valuable because it proves that the trobairitz spoke in their own words and not in the words of the male troubadours as has been previously thought. The poems printed here are well chosen to show that the trobairitz who had been considered fictitious inventions are real poets in their own right. The author's arguments are plausible and convincing and her translations of the poems are accurate, but not pedantic. (Frank M. Chambers, University of Arizona)
