Let me start of with something a bit controversial. Books are boring. There is no other piece of media in the world that is as boring as books are. When you have movies with breath-taking views and effects, books with their fonts which stay mostly the same throughout the whole binding of... a couple hundred pages, they just cannot compare.
This novel wants to break that. House of Leaves actively toys with the reader, throwing him off the loop with pages whose layout changes, becoming more and more twisted as the story goes, juicing that claustrophobic feeling from you. It is a horror book in its core, however it requires a lot of patience to get through and simply isn't for everyone. It's academic tone makes it very hard to do so, in particular.
The novel also makes you reconsider everything you've read once you get past certain points in the book, making it worthy of a re-read. If the book is right up your alley however, you will not be able to put this brilliant masterpiece down.
