Nature and landscape are central themes and fields of reference in Richard Frankenberger's oeuvre. Nature and the rural environment form the social, political and ecological sphere of activity employed by the artist both in his own work and as a curator, opening them up to critical discussion. Parallel to the discourse on nature in conceptual, installative and performative works, in Frankenberger's work the examination of nature also takes the form of landscape watercolours and pictorial studies of nature. Together they form a nuanced body of work in which tradition and experiment, figuration and abstraction mutually inspire tension and movement.
