Elzbieta Szoka has produced one of the first studies ever on Brazilian theater. Her interpretive and analytical view of three plays by Plínio Marcos takes on relatively new theoretical ground by distinguishing between dramatic and performance texts. Of particular interest is her choice of nonverbal devices and humor as an approach to Marcos' work. Szoka has also made a major contribution to the understanding of modern Brazilian theater. Hers is a first thorough and well-focused treatment of an important current in Brazilian drama, represented by the much-neglected Plínio Marcos. It is an excellent piece of work. (K. David Jackson, Yale University) Elzbieta Szoka has studied Plínio Marco's work in depth and has produced a fine semiotic study of three relevant plays of this Brazilian dramatist. (José Sanjinés, Interdisciplinary Journal for Germanic Linguistics and Semiotic Analysis)
