This book is indeed hell. I wanted to read something by a Czech scifi author, plus there was an interesting sounding plot about an alternate history of Czechoslovakia. But I had to rather force myself to finish the book from the first quarter onwards. The whole text is written in the style of a narration of a drugged child - it jumps between scenes, the plot is fragmented, it is not clear which character is speaking, it is impossible to distinguish when we are following the inner processes or impressions of a character and when the action around him is happening, etc. Just the fact that the transitions between scenes happen within regular paragraphs makes it unnecessarily difficult to read. If the author intended the book to be a frantic dream of a delirious patient (which part of the plot would suggest), then it is probably a good attempt indeed, yet unreadable to me. Perhaps Kerouac, with The Road, or P. K. Dick, with his books, achieved similar things with good readability.
